The Home of... Julia Chaplin

Julia scoured the internet for her Camaleonda sofa, a 1970s design by Mario Bellini for B&B Italia. Whether she’s having a dance party or her daughter is at play, the modular lightweight pieces get moved regularly.

A built-in carpeted platform bed, and the rope wall hanging by Sally England is the first piece Julia ever commissioned.

Having seen the books Gypset Travel, Style and Living at first glance I was quite surprised by the simplicity of Author Julia Chaplins New York Brownstone home. I was expecting, more tassels and feathers, bells and trinkets and certainly walls draped in textiles from around the world.....

.....but although Julias home is very minimal it does have a rock n roll edge...

.....the entire home is modeled after the Rolling Stones’ recording of Exile on Main Street. “I was looking at images of this old French château with grand structural bones,” Julia says. “When the Stones arrived, they pushed everything to the side to live on the floor—they converted the formality to fit their lifestyle.”

Once you look deeper, the fairly conservative home does have all the elements you would expect from a seasoned world traveler, just in moderation. It is in fact impeccably styled, and that vintage leather Mario Bellini sofa and Blue rug combination is just divine!

Of her sancuary Julia says
“It’s incredibly zen and quiet, a place where I can think and process all the stuff I’ve picked up running around the world,” she says. “Nothing is jarring, loud, or too distracting.”

Bohmian Garden: Relaxing Under a Parasol

Photography Bobby Fisher for Domino

Create your own beautiful Bohemian Parasol/ Garden umbrella with layered Scarfs and textiles

It is finally Summer, and here in the South West of England we have a wonderful heat wave on its way! I for one am really excited but it has got me thinking about toddler proofing my garden, and a large parasol for us to sit under is high on my list of priorities this year..... great for ensuring little Alex doesn't get burnt in the day and even better for sipping Prosecco under when he has gone to bed!

I really love the top two, for me tassels are always a winner as they remind me of far off exotic lands. However equally as wonderful is the bottom image.... why not create your own exotic Garden umbrella by layering scarfs and fabrics.... you can also play around with thickness for extra shade for the little ones

The top image is a Balinese style parasol, and I found similar here

Mirror Magic..... Ways to incorprate mirrors into your home

Painted Mirror
Those old fashioned dark wood Victorian mirrors that always look so gloomy and austere look great painted modern colours and create an eye catching center piece in the dining room

Large teak Mirro

If like mine, your inner walls are not all solid brick then rather than risk an accident why not lean large heavy full length mirrors against the wall. This beautiful heavy teak mirror looks great rested on the pink rattan table... A perfect look for a bedroom

Vintage Mirrors: I would love to do this in my bathroom

Although gaining popularity and therefore price, these beautiful vintage mirrors are still relatively cheap and look great as a collection. This look is perfect for a bathroom or hallway.

Large Antique Convex Mirrors

Antique beauty
I love round mirrors anyway, but the fact hat these mirrors are slightly deteriorating just adds to the beauty for me.

I just love this beautiful Seattle home of Homestead owners Michelle and Ryan. The home is just so perfectly curated, every item is stunning and just fits!..... and that circle shelf is just to die for isn't it?

Homestead Seattle sells antique and vintage furniture and home goods. Michele and Ryan Tansey, are the founders and owners and live and have a photography studio in the Madrona neighborhood of Seattle.

Our shop’s mission is to curate a collection of one of a kind and rare pieces with a current look. It’s our belief that vintage furnishings are pieces of history and we want to see them in the homes that they deserve. We’re happy to be able to save, preserve and extend the lives of the items in our shop.

Homestead was built on the idea that supporting small businesses and buying second hand is the eco-friendly and culturally ethical way to shop. We are a small family business and we shop small whenever possible.

Current Obsession: Japenese 'Washi' Tea Canisters...

Japanese tea Canister covered with Washi paper

Washi Paper literally translates as Wa - 'Japanese' and 'shi' paper, and refers to paper made in the traditional way. Washi is one of the UNESCO’s Intangible cultural heritage objects. Washi is used for many purposes in Japan, one of which is to decorate tea caddys.

Although these beautiful tea caddys may have a delicate paper exterior they do have a metal air tight skeleton to keep your tea fresh. The good news is these tins are also relatively cheap too!

I found some really beautiful tins on etsy and over at Rishi

Rolling Homes: An Awesome School Bus Conversion...

How stunning is this old school bus conversion found over at Tiny House Swoon?

I love the vintage vibe of this bus, it reminds me of the conversions from Rolling Homes, a book of campers and conversions from the 1970's . The woodwork tiling is really something else and i would love to see the morning light through that stained glass window!!

Mayne Island Cob House

Mayne Island Cob House

I have just returned to work after a wonderful rollercoaster 15 months of maternity leave. So for the last week we decided to rent a small cottage in the middle of no where and it was total bliss. It was a small one bedroom barn conversion just outside of Llanidloes in Wales and it totally won our hearts. We are both now dreaming of a simpler life in the country.... so expect loads of tiny country cottages coming up on Moon to Moon!

For starters I have found this place...

This beautiful 600 ft2 Cob house in Mayne Island, was supposedly the first Cob house in Canada. Although small it is perfectly formed! I just love that warm wooden ceiling in the bedroom..... wouldn't the rain would sound so lovely up there?

Not only are Cob houses such as this eco-friendly but they are also pretty cheap to construct, the original construction cost of this beautiful home was around $56,000 (designed by Cobworks.)

This home is available to rent on airbnb here
